The Len Stevens Scholarship Appeal – 150 Years of Engineering Education
In 2011, the Melbourne School of Engineering established the “Len Stevens Scholarship Appeal” in honour of Emeritus Professor Leonard Stevens AM, who was the patron of the 150th anniversary celebrations and former Dean of Engineering (1979-1988).
The Len Stevens Scholarship is designed to give exceptional students a transformative opportunity to broaden their experience beyond their studies. Through the Scholarship, generations of talented graduate students will have opportunities to enrich their studies by undertaking an extra-curricular project of their choice either locally or internationally.
While the Appeal was underway the MSE Foundation generously supported the award of interim Len Stevens Scholarships; we have awarded the scholarship to two worthy recipients, Jing Ming Ren who was the 2012 Len Stevens Scholarship recipient, and Eric Lambers who was awarded the Scholarship more recently in 2013. It has been wonderful to see the impact of the Len Stevens Scholarship on these two exceptional students, and inspiring, as we sought to raise the funds to provide such students with these opportunities in perpetuity.
We are therefore delighted to announce that we have successfully reached and exceeded our goal of raising $500,000 by the end of 2013 for this purpose. The success of this Appeal is a testament to the commitment and generosity of our community of alumni, friends and staff. We thank each and every one of you for contributing!

"I am passionate about supporting exceptional engineering students who willingly extend their learning beyond their Melbourne experience. The Melbourne School of Engineering seeks to raise $500,000 over three years to create an ongoing scholarship that will inspire engineering students of the highest calibre and enable them to undertake extra curricula learning opportunities either locally or globally during their graduate engineering studies.
When I was Dean of Engineering I saw first-hand the impact of giving in helping students pursue their dreams. Many of our alumni and friends gave generously to the Melbourne School of Engineering Foundation during my term and students could make choices that made a real difference to their education. Now the MSE Foundation Board of Management has generously committed $100,000 to help build this scholarship fund. I ask you to join me in establishing this scholarship to recognize talented students seeking to enrich their learning."

About Professor Len Stevens AM
Emeritus Professor Stevens AM is one of the most well respected members of staff in Engineering. As Dean of the School in the 1980s, he was instrumental in establishing the Melbourne School of Engineering Foundation (MSEF) trust fund, to which our alumni and friends have generously donated for many years. This Foundation is now known as the Melbourne School of Engineering Foundation (MSE Foundation).
Emeritus Professor Stevens AM was also appointed a Member of the Order of Australia in 2005 for services to civil engineering, particularly through the theory and practice of structural engineering, and to tertiary education as an educator and administrator, Professor Stevens continues to influence the next generation with regular teaching commitments and is often sought as a guest of honour at engineering alumni reunions.
